Fall Cleaning Checklist
Fall Cleaning Checklist
Fall is the perfect time to clean home areas that aren’t in the regular rotation of chores. The weather is now cooler and more tolerable while still being mild enough to spend hours outside. During the summer months, it’s easy to ignore certain chores outside while vacationing or spending late nights out with friends. It’s finally time to button up the house and get it ready for winter by following the list below.
Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts
As discussed in previous blogs, gutters and downspouts can quickly become blocked with debris. Leaves, dirt, and other small object can obstruct the flow of water. When that happens, flooding and other severe problems can occur. One significant way to avoid that is to be proactive when taking care of the gutters. Clean them out every couple of months, but during the fall months, it’s especially important. As we know, leaves are constantly falling this time of year, making it even easier for gutters to become clogged. We always recommend that homeowners install gutter guards to avoid blockages.
Inspect roof inside and outside for weak spots
Signs of wear and tear on a roof are not good indicators right before winter hits. During winter, water can fall into even the most minor crack; when it freezes, the once small gap can now be a large hole. Water expands when it freezes, making it destructive when it lands in places you don’t want it. If you spot a weak-looking spot in the attic, on your ceilings, or on the exterior of your roof, call a professional to look at it right away.
Remove window screens
Did you know removing window screens is one of the most important things to do before winter comes? Screens can hold onto ice and snow that winter brings. Ice and snow build-up can lead to damaged screens with holes or tears in them come springtime. When you remove them, ensure there is no current damage and that they are clean. A quick scrub with soap and water will get them winterized and ready to be stored until spring comes.
Wash exterior and interior of windows
Washing windows is a great thing to do in the fall. You’ll be glad to have shiny clean windows during the long winter months. After taking down the screens and cleaning the gutters above, it’s the perfect time to wipe the window with a soft cloth and cleaning solution. We recommend starting on the outside and then working inside. Now is also the ideal time to freshen up curtains and blinds.
