When is The Best Time of Year to Replace Your Roof?

When to Replace Your Roof - New Look Roof Blog - Louisville Kentucky

If you’re reading this blog, you are probably considering getting a new roof. Not quite sure if your roof requires replacement? Consider reading one of our past blogs that talks about when you need to get in touch with professionals about a new roof. Roof installation is something that can’t happen year-round due to the ever-changing weather. The best time of year to schedule a new roof installation typically falls between April and October. These months are usually the prime time because of the appropriate weather conditions present.

Why you should get a new roof in the summer months:

One huge factor that is important to consider when choosing the month for install is the expected temperature outside. Roofing contractors can’t install asphalt shingles in temperatures under 45°F. This is because when too cold, the adhesive and waterproof layer can’t adhere to the roof underlayment. On the flip side, extreme heat can cause the shingles to become brittle and weak, making them less durable during installation. When shingles are less stable, they are more prone to scuffs and damage, which no one wants on their brand-new roof.

Another aspect that depicts when to replace a roof is considering the rainy season. Professional roofers come prepared for the weather to change unexpectedly, but in ideal conditions, it’s sunny and above 45°F. Rainwater makes it dangerous for roofers to be on the roof because the slip hazards are increased with running water. Excess water on the roof also makes it more challenging to get the adhesive to stick on the roof.

In our opinion, the late summer and early fall season is the best time to get your roof replaced. The heat is manageable and comfortable (for both our crew and the shingles), and the humidity significantly decreases as the weather moves farther from the rainy season. In Kentucky, the driest month is October which makes us excited to install some roofs! Low heat and humidity create the optimal conditions for a new roof installation. Keep in mind that because these months are the ideal time of year for installation, they are also the busiest for contractors. If you believe that your home may need a new roof by the end of summer, consider scheduling months in advance (psst that means now).
