September is National Preparedness Month – How to Prepare for Upcoming Bad Weather

The month of September is a reminder for homeowners to get ready for the upcoming winter weather. Hurricane season brings storms that are blown up from the south into the Louisville area. Preparing for these storms should be an annual chore. Below, we will discuss steps to prepare your home and save you money in future repairs. Following our guide can be the difference between having a damaged, leaky roof this winter and a solid, dry roof.

• Check for leaks

Look around any window, outside door, pipes, and other areas where water can easily seep through. Intense thunderstorms can penetrate those cracks with water and wind in a more brutal way if there is already evident water damage. If you find any leaks, check out this previous blog that discusses the steps to mitigate the problem.

• Trim trees

If there are large trees or shrubs near your home, they have the potential to do some damage. Following hurricanes, after-storms and thunderstorms bring strong winds that can blow trees, branches, and other debris into windows and roofs. By trimming down the large branches, you lessen the chance of needing to call a roofing company to help repair a damaged roof.

• Clean gutters

As discussed in a previous blog, gutters help direct water away from your foundation, the exterior walls of the home, and increase the roof's longevity. However, those benefits won't be seen if the gutters are already backed up with debris. Now is a great time to clear out the leaves, twigs, and dirt build-up. To prevent future build-up, consider investing in gutter guards. Be safe when cleaning out the gunk from the gutters; many people get hurt every year when trying to do so. If you need a helping hand, New Look Roof would be happy to clean them out for you.

• Verify insurance coverage

One last tip that we have is to make sure your insurance is up-to-date and covers what you need it to cover. Insurance is no good if it doesn't protect what you expected it to when you're in need. Verify with your insurance agent that if you need to make a claim for a damaged roof, the resources an insurance company offers will be available to you.
