Safe Holiday Décor for Your Home
The holiday season brings a lot of joy! Seeing the fun Christmas lights, wreaths, and decorated homes is one of the best parts of this time of year. Last month, we wrote a blog about decorating your home safely during the fall season. This month, we thought it would be good to discuss the dangers that Christmas decorations bring. When decorating your home, it's crucial to keep in mind these few tips to keep your home, your family, and your decorations safe!
Plan display out to avoid overloading outlets
Plan out your display of holiday decorations along with the available outlets outside to avoid overloading outlets. Typically, when an outlet has more than three strands of lights plugged into it, the risk of surges is increased significantly. To avoid that, plan for the display and the number of outlets that are needed. If you're short outlets, some products are meant for Christmas lights and are designed specifically for when multiple items need to be plugged in. You can find them at any store that sells Christmas lights.
Avoid using nails to hang lights
Never staple or nail wires or light strands to your home. Electrical shock or fire is possible when nails and staples are put through electrical wiring. We typically recommend using hooks and other adhesive products that can fasten lights, wreaths, and other decor without causing permanent damage to the exterior of your home.
Inspect light strands before stringing up
Carefully look at all the lights and decorations before putting them up. If there are cracks, damaged sockets, and loose or bare wires, fix the issue or replace that decoration before putting it up. Faulty wiring can cause electrical shock and or fires during the holiday season.
Use decorations that cause the least amount of damage
We typically recommend decorating your home with items that will not cause permanent damage to your siding, roof, and any other area that is prone to damage during this season. Items like inflatables, wreaths, and potted Christmas trees, as seen below, are all great options when decorating for Christmas. One helpful tip when choosing décor is to assess whether or not that piece of decoration will cause damage that can be seen for many more years. If the answer is yes, try to avoid using it or choose an installation process that is not permanent. As we talked about above, items like adhesive hooks are great options!
