#ProTips To Clean and Maintain Your Gutters
The gutters around your home are the seal of your roof. They protect your roof from becoming damaged when water and debris are built up, keeping them away from your home. Over time, you'll notice that the build-up is something that should be taken care of. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
1. Keep your gutters clean
We recommend that you clean your gutters at least once every year. If you have a yard with lots of trees, you might want to do it twice a year; there's probably a lot more build-up of twigs and debris. Another good thing to remember is that you should also check your gutters after it storms because they can become clogged with twigs and water.
2. Secure your gutters
If your home is older, you'll probably notice that sometimes the gutters will begin to sag or loosen up. That can be a quick fix using a cordless drill to secure the gutter screws and provide more support for your gutters. Even if your home is newer, it's still important to check this and make sure there are no gutter screws missing!
3. Check your downspouts
Checking your downspouts is a simple task. You check the spouts leading down towards the ground for any leaves or debris and ensure that it's clear for water to flow through during a storm. Also remember to make sure that the base of the downspout is pointed away from your house, to avoid any flooding that would cause further issues.
4. Patch any holes or replace any damage
If you notice any smaller holes in your gutter, those can quickly be filled with plastic roofing cement. For the larger ones, perhaps use galvanized metal flashing. But keep in mind, if you think that the hole is too big, it might be best to replace that entire section of the gutter system.
5. Gutter guards can save you some stress
A gutter guard can be resourceful because it's a wire screen that goes over your gutters to block debris or anything else from building up inside. These come in handy if you hate checking your gutters.
Maintaining your gutters is a reasonably simple task to do, although it never hurts to call in a professional. If you were to seek out someone to clean your gutters for you, it may cost anywhere between $50-$250 depending on the size of your home and how long the job would take. If you're experiencing issues with your gutter and you're not sure how to solve them, it never hurts to have someone take a look.
