Most Structurally Sound Roof

When building a home, choosing the right kind of roof can be stressful. Last month, we wrote a blog about the different types of roofs and each style. Now, we want to highlight the most structurally sound ones that will be worth the investment. In the United States, hip roofs and gable roofs are among the most popular style of roof that homeowners have. In this blog, we will be focusing on those two types since they are the most common.

Hip roofs

Hip roofs are known for their clean, modern design with outstanding durability. They are known for having slopes on all four sides that have equal lengths and form a ridge. This roof style is ideal for areas that tend to be windy and snowy because the slanted rooflines allow for snow and rain to slide off easily.

Gable roofs

Gable roofs have two sides that peak and slope downward towards the home. They are relatively simple to construct and therefore more affordable. Gable roofs are incredibly prone to incurring a large amount of damage in windy areas or places that experience frequent hurricanes. Some pros for this type of roof are that it offers additional space in the attic or allows for vaulted ceilings. Gable roofs can also be good at directing water off the roof and allowing good airflow into the home.

Which is better?

Hip roofs tend to be more expensive than gable roofs due to the complex design requiring more materials like trusses or rafters. Even though the roof is more expensive, framing the inside of the home will be less expensive because all of the walls are the same height.

Overall, hipped roofs are more durable and structurally sound because the slope can redirect high winds, rain, and snow away from the house. They offer a great source of ventilation, allowing homeowners to have the flexibility for simple additions they may want at a later time. Gutters can also be easily installed because the fascia is consistent throughout. Don’t know what a fascia is? Read our previous blog explaining them! Since the gutters can wrap around the home, foundations and basements are protected from flooding. Gable roofs don’t have all four inward sloping sides, which gives hip roofs the advantage against nasty weather.
