How Weather Impacts Your Roof

It’s difficult to predict mother nature and what type of weather she plans to bring on to your home, especially as we start to approach the cold winter months. You may have even dealt with some instances during the spring or summer as well. Today we want to talk about the impacts that weather can have on your roof system.

Storms

In all types of storms, you can experience damage. Rain is probably the most common issue that comes to mind when you think of storms. If your roof is missing shingles or has any holes or leaks, it’s likely to have greater damage from a storm.

If you add wind into the mix, you may start seeing some serious issues. This is another point where it’s good to make sure that none of your shingles are cracked or missing. If the wind picks those up, then your home is exposed to the storm. Although it’s not always the wind itself causing issues, sometimes it can be falling objects such as branches and trees.

Snow

As we've noted in previous articles, when it snows you should have it removed every six inches of snowfall. The snow can pile up and begin to damage the structure of your roof. Also in colder temperatures, when ice begins to build up in your gutters it can cause issues when it gets warmer and the snow begins melting from the roof, the ice will create an ice dam and the melted snow won’t be able to go through the gutters. In the long run, that will cause you more stress.

Heat

When you think of roofing issues typically you would think of the previous topics mentioned, but what slips most peoples' mind is the factor of how damaging the heat can be on your roof in the summertime. If your roof isn’t shaded, the dark color absorbs the heat. Extreme heat can cause certain materials to expand. When the materials expand, your roof will age faster. Having proper ventilation can help you avoid some of those issues.

Natural Disasters

These are the toughest ones as they seem to be the types of storms that can come with a warning, but you can never truly equip yourself for. If you live somewhere that experiences things such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or ice storms, the best protection that you can give yourself is to get your roof checked regularly. Make sure that it’s in good shape before any storm happens, and once again after the storm passes.

While we cannot control the weather, we can control how we prepare for it. It never hurts to have someone come out and give you a second opinion to ensure the safety of your roof. If you have any doubts about your roof system, have someone look at it. You don’t want it to cost you more later on down the road.
