How Long Should My Siding Last?

When it comes to the exterior of your home, you deserve the best. That’s why when it comes to the siding on your home, you want to make sure it’s in good condition. You may find yourself asking, “How often should siding be replaced?” We’re here to help you out. First, let’s talk about the different types of siding that there are and what kind of life expectancy they should have.

Vinyl

Vinyl is a very popular go-to when it comes to siding because it’s durable, easy on the price, and has simple maintenance needs. With basic maintenance it can last you 20-40 years. (Some experts say even longer) Be advised that with all types of siding, the quality of the material that you get is going to dictate how long it lasts. Another great feature about vinyl siding is that when it comes in contact with any moisture, it rolls right off. There’s no room for anything to sit and rot, creating more problems. Also, vinyl is recyclable, so we aren’t hurting the planet!

Wood

Having wooden siding on your home is a very traditional route to go. In fact, that’s the type of material used in many older homes and has proven to be a resourceful way to protect your home. It looks beautiful and should last you a few decades. Although, when it comes to wood siding, there is one catch: proper maintenance. Wood being a natural element, you have to inspect it throughout the year for any rot, mold, or pests. If you find any issues? Call up a professional and get those taken care of immediately. Not to mention, when you replace wood siding, it’s recyclable! Another excellent option to consider when siding your home.

Metal/ Aluminum

Before the time of vinyl, and people were tired of dealing with the maintenance of wood, along came metal siding as a substitute. Over the years, it’s proven to be a low-maintenance and quite popular option amongst newer homes, although as the demand for steel overseas has risen, so has the price. Some issues you may face using these types of materials are dents appearing, or if you have pre-painted aluminum, the siding may be prone to chalking. The life expectancy for this type of material, on average, is 30-50 years, depending on how well you take care of it.

Fiber Cement

This is a newer type of siding that I wouldn’t particularly recommend. This material is not friendly to the environment and cannot be recycled. Some of the highlights you can benefit from using this would be that it’s durable and fire-resistant, but the cost will get you. Labor costs are higher because it’s more challenging to install the material itself is pricy. You’re looking at 2-3 times more in price compared to aluminum or vinyl siding. The life expectancy for this type of siding is 50 years. Another factor to keep in mind is the maintenance of repainting. Fiber cement needs to be repainted every few years to continue looking fresh.

Overall, if you’re planning on residing your home, it’s good always to ask questions. Questions are always free J Not only does this project make your home look better; it adds value to it, so you’re getting back more on your investment when it comes time to sell.
