How Can You Tell if Your Roof Has Damage?
The roof on your home isn’t something that you typically think about daily. It keeps you warm and dry inside, but does it require maintenance? Yes and no. Depending on the age and condition of your home, some things may need to be repaired or replaced. How do you know if the exterior of your home, primarily your roof, has suffered any damage after a storm? Let’s talk about some of the signs that you can look for.
Shingles
The first and most obvious sign of damage is If the overall appearance of your roof doesn’t look well, and some of the shingles are curled, cracked, barely hanging on, or missing and need to be replaced. If the shingle doesn’t have very much damage, it may just need to be repaired. If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy getting on the roof, this may be a job that you want to call a professional out for.
The Attic
Having a proper ventilation system going in your attic is essential to avoid any problems with other elements such as your siding or the walls in your home. Never block off sources of roof ventilation, even in the winter. Making that mistake may cause more problems to begin inside of your home, along with the ones you’ll already be dealing with outside. We know that going up to the attic may be a chore, but it may be worth taking a peek at.
The Walls
Can the roof really have that much of an effect on the elements inside of your home? Yes. If your roof isn’t doing its job due to being damaged, you may begin seeing moisture build-up and leave stains on your ceilings and walls. If a roof leak isn’t repaired right away, it can lead to mold growth on your walls, ceilings, and attic. That is a problem that you do not want to experience because it can make you sick and cause further damage to your home. Always call up a professional if you have any worries about mold growing in your home.
Exterior Paint
If your attic doesn’t have proper ventilation, it allows moisture to build up near the roofline. When that happens, it can cause the paint on the exterior of your home to peel or blister. It also could very well be an issue with your siding, but the maintenance of those two go hand in hand. Your roof and the siding work together as a team to keep your home, and your family protected from any outside elements.
Gutters
Another helpful way to determine if your roof is damaged is by checking the gutters. This can be done relatively easily with a ladder. If there is damage, you’ll notice decay or rust, gutters hanging down due to missing sections, and usually a build-up of leaves and water. If you don’t feel comfortable getting up there and checking for yourself, we can always come out and do it.
