Frieze Board - What Is It?

Have you seen our latest video yet? In it, New Look Roof owner, Julian West, explains one of the services New Look offers to clients: installing the soffit-fascia-frieze-board wrap. Clients highly request this service because it's virtually maintenance-free and dresses up the exterior of any home. This blog will discuss what a frieze board is, why it's useful, and the common materials frieze board is usually made of.

What is frieze board?

Frieze board is a kind of trim used on the exterior of homes to fill in any gaps between the siding and the soffit and make the house look more "finished." Using a trim on the outside of homes has a practicality to it. Trim helps cover up any mistakes that were made during construction. When properly installed, the frieze board makes the gaps and unaligned angles appear to meet up. A typical installation is using the frieze board flat against the house's siding, but it can also be installed at an angle on a gable.

While frieze board is practical, it is also for decorative appeal. When changing between siding colors, frieze board trim can be used as a break between the different styles and colors.

Why is frieze board useful?

Similar to indoor trim, frieze board is considered an essential step in the finished carpentry. There are two main functions that frieze board is used for: protecting your home from the elements and establishing a more finished appearance. When there are gaps between the siding and the underside of the soffit, water can leak through the cracks leading to mold and mildew problems. The frieze board will cover those gaps so water and other issues cannot create problems beneath the siding.

The second benefit of using frieze board is to create a polished, finished look. Think about what a house would look like if there weren't any trim. The mistakes made during construction would be highlighted and obvious to the eye. Luckily, trim covers up any imperfect lines or errors made. As discussed earlier, it also creates a transition piece to switch between different siding styles and colors.

What is frieze board made of?

There is a long list of what this type of trim can be made of. The most common type of material is cedarwood. Cedar isn't always ideal because it needs to be painted every few years and is susceptible to water damage. If the frieze board isn't cedar, it's most often made up of the type of wood the rest of the house was built with.

Engineered trim, aluminum, and fiber cement are other options for homeowners who want a more durable frieze board. Houses usually use the same material for their frieze board as they did for the siding. For example, if the siding is fiber cement, the frieze board is typically also fiber cement.
