Common Roofing Issues That Should Catch Your Attention

When it comes to keeping up on the exterior of your home, most of us fix those problems as they appear head-on because it's something detrimental such as a broken window or the siding on your home needs to be replaced. What most of us tend to neglect are the issues that we face with our roof, simply because it's not something that you look at when you're pulling into your driveway after a long day at work. Let's talk about some of the things you should be looking to save yourself some money down the road.

Dark Streaks

The first sign of an issue within your home's roof will be if you notice any dark streaking. It’s an algae growth known as "gloeocaspa magma." You'll see spots that look darker, which shows water retention in your shingles. If the water starts to build up, you’ll notice your shingles begin to curl and maybe even fall off. Neglecting any problems that may arise with this, will cause water to enter your roof and then you’ll be needing to replace a lot more than just your shingles.

Shingles

Next, you want to watch out for your shingles. If your shingles have gone neglected for too long the wood underneath may rot and allow more water to enter your home and can also affect the overall insulation of your roof, allowing heat to escape. If you see a large amount of curled or missing shingles, it can sometimes be an easy fix, or it may be time to replace your roof.

High energy bills

If you find yourself saying, “Why have my energy bills been so high?" The issue could by lying in your roof. We know that heat rises and not having the proper insulation in your attic can cause the heat in your home to escape; therefore, your energy costs are going through the roof (quite literally). You want to make sure that issue doesn’t go unsolved for too long, investing in the wellness of your roof could save you a lot of money.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that you need a complete roof replacement though. Just because there’s a slight leak or a few missing shingles doesn’t mean your roof isn’t still of good quality. If you think that any of these issues apply to you, the best thing that you can do is schedule an appointment with a licensed professional and make sure that your roof is safe for at least another two years. You owe that to yourself, don't you?
